about me

massiel cobblah gutierrez

My name is Massiel Cobblah Gutierrez; however, I go by Massi. I was born in Cuba but moved to the islands of Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) for the first nine years of my life. While living in Cabo Verde, I learned Portuguese as well as Cape Verdean Creole and I was able to immerse myself in the country’s beautiful culture and history.  In 2011, my family decided to immigrate to Miami, Florida, the place I have called home for the last thirteen years. My upbringing as a Black Hispanic woman shaped my views on the world and led me to face many challenges which have translated into my current resilience and strength. I believe that life is full of challenges, but these equip us to become stronger and better versions of ourselves.

Currently, I am a fourth-year student at the University of Florida double majoring in Criminology and Women's Studies while also minoring in Sociology. Within the completion of my undergraduate studies, I will be taking a gap year where I will be applying to law school. In the future, I hope to work with wrongfully convicted individuals where I hope to directly serve underrepresented communities and bring change to the social injustices they face.

In my free time, you will find me reading, scrapbooking, running, and traveling. I have many different hobbies and I am constantly seeking to learn new skills! At present, I have started crocheting with the hopes of being able to make garments of clothing in the future. I believe one is never too old to begin something new!
